Tier-II retail expansion sustains earnings momentum for Trent

Tata Group’s fashion retail arm Trent Ltd generated a 21.98 per cent increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 518.07 crore in Q1, FY27, up from Rs 413.10 crore recorded in the corresponding prior-year period. Consolidated revenue from operations expanded by17.84 per cent to Rs 5,754.71 crore, supported by steady retail network expansion across value and aspirational apparel formats. Strategic focus centered on deep Tier-II and Tier-III city penetration, with over 80 percent of newly opened Zudio outlets positioned in secondary markets and emerging growth micro-markets. Operating EBITDA advanced 36 per cent to Rs 847 crore, reflecting operational leverage despite elevated raw material costs and soft discretionary consumer spending across urban centers.

Portfolio diversification mitigates slower store addition pace

While store additions moderated to 20 net new outlets in Q1 FY27—including 22 Zudio openings and one Westside location - total retail space surpassed 18 million sq ft across 1,312 stores in 330 cities. Emerging non-apparel categories like footwear, innerwear, and personal care accounted for over 21 per cent of overall revenues, providing key margin protection. A case in point is Zudio’s value-fashion model, which maintained low single-digit like-for-like sales growth by accelerating inventory turn cycles and expanding domestic apparel sourcing. "Our brands continue to represent a small share of the overall addressable market, providing significant headroom for growth across geographies and customer segments, states Noel N Tata, Chairman, Trent Limited.

Strategic capital deployment addresses demand volatility

Retailers face persistent margin headwinds from rising commercial real estate leases and shifting regional demand patterns. Trent plans to open up to 100 Westside stores annually while scaling Zudio's footprint to capture rising regional purchasing power across Tier-II and Tier-III towns. Industry analysts note that aggressive store expansion in secondary hubs helps domestic fashion conglomerates offset subdued metro footfalls, positioning value apparel operators for sustained long-term volume gains.

Established in 1998 as part of Tata Group, Trent Limited operates leading fashion retail chains including Westside, Zudio, and Utsa across 330 cities. Specializing in private-label apparel, footwear, and lifestyle merchandise, the company plans aggressive store network expansion, supported by strong double-digit revenue growth and expanding operating margins.
