French sports goods giant Decathlon targets $1 billion in sales from the Indian market over the next five years. This ambitious goal will be driven by expanding the company’s retail channels, growing its product portfolio, and capitalizing on the country’s burgeoning sports culture, says Sankar Chatterjee, CEO, Decathlon India.
Currently operating 132 stores across 55 cities in India, Decathlon plans to expand its presence to more than 90 cities by 2030, with a revenue target of around Rs 8,000 crore. The company aims to grow its revenues by double-digits year by year, states Chatterjee. This will enable it to capture a significant share in the sports market in India, he adds.
In FY24, Decathlon Sports India reported an operational revenue of Rs 4,008.26 crore and returned to profitability. The company aims to become a billion-dollar enterprise in the next four to five years, affirms Chatterjee. Its revenue are estimated to grow to Rs 7,500 crore- Rs 8,000 crore within that timeframe.
Decathlon has ‘big plans for India,; where it has increased local sourcing to 70 per cent and aims to raise that figure to 90 per cent by 2030. The company’s retail growth strategy focuses not only on major metropolitan areas but also on penetrating smaller Tier II and III cities with a strong sports culture, such as Prayagraj, Kolhapur, and Udaipur. It also recently opened new stores in metro cities like Mumbai and Chennai.
The company is strategically integrating its online platforms with its physical stores to create a robust omnichannel system. It is also expanding its product offerings to meet the growing demand for specialized gear in sports like mountain sports, running, and racket sports like pickleball.
In a push for sustainability and affordability, Decathlon has implemented a circular business model in India. This initiative includes offering repair services, selling refurbished products, and a buyback program for used equipment, which has received a "very good response."
Decathlon first entered India with production in 1999 and began its retail operations in 2009.
