19 February 2025, Mumbai
Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced a significant revamp of its international business, featuring the appointment of Manish Kapoor as the new managing director for M&S India. Kapoor, joining from Pepe Jeans, will assume his role in April, bringing extensive experience in the Indian retail sector.
This strategic move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen M&S's global leadership, with Victoria Jones, formerly of Clarks, appointed as commercial director, international, and Richard Davies promoted to international partnerships director. All three will report to Mark Lemming, managing director, International.
Lemming emphasized the focus on building strong foundations for sustainable growth, highlighting the crucial role Kapoor and the new team will play. Kapoor’s prior experience includes successful tenures at Pepe Jeans, French Connection, and Benetton, where he demonstrated a proven track record in driving growth and profitability.
M&S, which has over 100 stores in India, its largest international market outside the UK, aims to appeal to younger shoppers and enhance its brick-and-mortar presence. The retailer's focus on quality merchandise comes as it navigates a competitive market featuring brands like Levi's and Uniqlo, known for their functional basics. M&S Reliance saw a 5 per cent sales growth in FY24, reaching Rs 1742 crore.
