Swedish fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) has expanded its presence in India with the inauguration of two new stores in Pune and Bengaluru. These new mark the 57th and 58th stores for H&M in the country. Notably, the Bengaluru store is the brand's sixth establishment in the city, while the Pune store is the fourth in the metropolis.

The Pune store, situated in the Phoenix Mall of the Millennium, adopts H&M's home concept introduced in 2033.

Backdrop

Since entering the Indian market in 2015, the Stockholm-based H&M has successfully opened 58 stores across the country. In comparison, Zara, owned by Inditex, has established only 21 stores.

Founded in 1947 by Erling Persson, H&M made its debut in India in October 2015. Presently, the brand operates in 30 cities across India, offering a seamless online shopping experience through its website, app, and the fashion e-commerce platform Myntra.

In the fiscal year ending March 2023, Delhi-based lingerie retailer Clovia recorded an impressive 70 per cent increase in revenues, reaching Rs 291.71 crore compared to the previous fiscal year's Rs 171.16 crore, according to Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) filings.

However, despite robust top-line growth, the Reliance Retail-backed venture reported a substantial net loss of 54per cent, amounting to Rs 80.93 crore in FY23. This loss was attributed to a notable increase in expenses, which rose by 68per cent to Rs 376.44 crore compared to FY22.

Of particular note is the remarkable 121 per cent year-over-year surge in employee benefit expenses and other expenses reaching Rs 213.16 crore, a significant rise from the previous year's Rs 117.63 crore.

Reliance Retail Ventures acquired an 89 per cent stake in Clovia's parent company, Purple Panda Fashions, last year, leaving the remaining 11per cent in the hands of Clovia's founding team. Valued at Rs 950 crore, this deal included both primary investment and a secondary share sale, contributing to Reliance Retail's strategic expansion in the online fashion sector.

The women's apparel market is poised for substantial growth, projected to reach $39 billion by FY25, up from $25 billion in FY20, according to a report by Wazir Advisors. A significant driver of this growth is expected to be the innerwear segment.

Louis Vuitton, the global luxury fashion brand, has opened its second store in Mumbai at Jio World Plaza, Mumbai's largest luxury mall. The 7,365 sq. ft. store is located in the newly opened mall and is the brand's second outlet in Mumbai, with the first being at The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Apollo Bunder.

Louis Vuitton leased the space from Reliance Industries in September 2023 for a monthly rent of Rs 40.50 lakh, securing a nine-year agreement.

Nuanced picture

This marks the brand's fourth store in India, following its entry into the country in 2003 with the first store in the Oberoi Hotel, New Delhi. Other stores are located in UB City, Bengaluru, and DLF Emporio, New Delhi, along with the Taj Mahal Palace in South Mumbai.

In addition to its physical presence, Louis Vuitton expanded its reach in India by launching an online store in July, joining its online ventures in various countries across Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
