Growth in Tier-II, III cities drives expansion of value fashion across India

Value fashion retailers are seeing a strong acceleration in momentum, powered by rising discretionary consumption across small-town markets. Demonstrating this trend, V-Mart Retail delivered a 40.5 per cent growth in Q1 net profit to Rs 47.2 crore, up from Rs 33.6 crore in the year-ago period. Top-line growth mirrored this trajectory, with quarterly revenue from operations expanding 23 per cent to Rs 1,088.8 crore. Operational performance was boosted by a 9 per cent same-store sales growth (SSSG), while EBITDA margins expanded by 50 basis points to 14.8 per cent.

Strategic store footprint and digital scaling reshape mass apparel market

Retailers are capitalizing on untapped demand in regional hubs by aggressively expanding physical footprints alongside digital channels. During the quarter, V-Mart added 15 new stores, bringing its total operational network to 591 outlets across 50 lakh sq ft of retail space. Retail trade contributed Rs 1,083.5 crore, while digital marketplace streams added Rs 10.4 crore.

Cost-conscious consumers in emerging markets are seeking elevated fashion assortments without compromising on affordability, says a senior retail sector equity analyst. Store optimization and tighter inventory cycles are driving mid-single-digit footfall increases and stronger gross margins, he adds

Headwinds and strategic adjustments in value retailing

Despite robust top-line momentum, players in the value segment face ongoing risks from elevated raw material costs, local competition, and high debt servicing obligations. Retailers must balance aggressive capital expenditure in Tier-II and Tier-III towns against strict working capital discipline. Companies that combine localized product sourcing with targeted promotional campaigns are best positioned to navigate seasonal demand fluctuations and sustain store-level profitability.

V-Mart Retail is an omni-channel value fashion retailer serving Tier-II, III, and IV markets across India. Operating nearly 600 stores under the V-Mart and Unlimited banners, its product portfolio spans family apparel, footwear, and general merchandise. Founded in 2002, the company targets 15 per cent annual revenue growth through network expansion and enhanced digital presence.
