 COVID-induced restrictions lead to 50% decline in June retail sales: Retailers Association of India (RAI)

Continued pandemic led restrictions resulted in 50 per cent decline in India’s retail sales in June, as compared to the same month in 2019, shows latest survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI).

The highest decline of 66 per cent was witnessed in sports goods category while food and grocery category recorded the least decline of 7 per cent as compared to June 2019.

East zone witnessed the biggest decline in June this year at 55 per cent, followed by West and South with declines of 50 per cent each and North with a dip of 43 per cent when compared to June 2019. Growth in the beauty, wellness, and personal care categories dipped by 57 per cent during the month as compared to the same month in 2019.

The apparel and clothing category dipped 52 per cent while the footwear category dipped by 61 per cent. Consumer durables and electronics segment declined 46 per cent in June as compared to the same month in 2019. It had posted a dip of 71 per cent in May as compared to May 2019.
