India’s fashion industry suffers major setback as Darshan Mehta, MD &CEO, Reliance Brands dies

The fashion and retail industry in India suffered a major setback with the passing away of Darshan Mehta, former Managing Director and CEO, Reliance Brands (RBL) due to a heart attack.
One of the key architects of India’s premium and luxury retail landscape, Mehta has been part of Reliance Brands since its inception in 2007. During his 17-year-long journey with the company, he played a key role in launching and expanding over 90 international fashion and lifestyle brands nationwide.
These included brands such as Valentino, Versace, Armani, Bottega Veneta, Coach, Jimmy Choo, Pottery Barn, Muji, Zegna, and Boss.

In 2024, Mehta transitioned from his executive into a mentorship role within Reliance and continued to serve as a non-executive director on RBL’s board.
Even after moving out of day-to-day operations, he was involved in shaping business strategy and mentoring new leaders.
Before joining Reliance, Mehta led Arvind Brands as its President from 2001-2007. He was responsible for building India’s early branded apparel portfolio, Known for his strategic vision and deep understanding of consumer behavior, Mehta was among the first to identify the long-term potential of global luxury retail in India.
He was known for his ability to build relationships and navigate complex markets with a calm yet decisive approach.
