The winners of the ‘NEXA presents The Spotlight' competition have been announced by FDCI and Lakmé Fashion Week

29th September 2021, Mumbai:

This season, FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week returns with its one-of-a-kind program, ‘NEXA presents The Spotlight.' After a difficult selection procedure, designers Naushad Ali of label Naushad Ali and label SWGT take home the winning cup in the 2nd edition of the program.

Designers from all across India were asked to take part in the program by presenting their collections, as well as the concept and idea for a fashion film, via a virtual presentation in front of an eminent jury of industry professionals.

The nine shortlisted designers in the final round were Alan Alexander Kaleekal for his label Kaleekal, Santanu Das for his label MAKU Textiles, Naushad Ali for his label Naushad Ali, Resham Karamchandani for her label Pot Plant, Sreejith Jeevan for his label Rouka, Salita Nanda for her label Salita Nanda, Riddhi for her label Studio Medium, and SWGT.

Each designer was tasked with interpreting the theme "Euphoria" in their submissions in line with NEXA's "create, inspire" philosophy. The winning designers will get the opportunity to shoot and create their fashion film, which will premiere during the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week in October 2021.

The winning presentation by Naushad Ali is all about finding answers to a new path. It's called 'Getting out there- A ride through the morning,' and it's about a free-spirited girl who defies all the norms.

It's fundamentally a route to one's own self-discovery, a trek toward daybreak. The 34-year-old designer from Pondicherry has reinterpreted Indian weaving traditions with his SS/FW'21 collection, which features multi-colored strong strokes of Jamdani in textured cotton, big-scale irregular checks, and variegated stripes in a variety of natural colors.

SWGT's winning presentation is based on Shweta Gupta's childhood memories and the local history of Almora, where the 34-year-old designer grew up. The muse is personified as a seeker, traveler, gatherer, and thinker in her label SWGT, which represents the link between the mountains, people, and culture.

The designer depicts the folds of mountains and waterfalls surrounding us in this season's collection, and the techniques she uses to create her outfits are inspired by the cutting of the Himalayan Ranges.

“We at FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week believe that the young and rising generation of designers has the potential to determine the future of fashion,” said Jaspreet Chandok, Head, RISE Fashion & Lifestyle. The second edition of ‘NEXA presents The Spotlight' demonstrates our dedication to provide them with a platform to display their work.

I would like to congratulate all of the nominated designers on their outstanding designs. For the first time, we've chosen two winners for NEXA Presents The Spotlight, and we're really thrilled to see what Naushad Ali and SWGT have in store for their audience.”
