Nearly five years after its ban due to political tensions, Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL) has relaunched Chinese fast-fashion brand Shein in India. Following a two-month trial on its Ajio fashion app, Shein has been launched with its own dedicated app on the App Store and Google Play Store.
Offering budget-friendly and trendy clothing options, Singapore-based Shein partnered with RRVL two years ago to facilitate its re-entry into India. As per Piyush Goyal, Commerce and Industry Minister, Shein will operate on a completely Indian retail platform, ensuring it has no access to or control over Indian consumer data.
The local e-commerce platform will be developed as per a technology agreement between Reliance Retail Ventures and Roadget Business. It will include the establishment of a network of Indian manufacturers and suppliers to produce and sell Shein-branded products.
As per Redseer Strategy Consultants report, India’s fast fashion market will exceed $50 billion in sales by FY2031. Fast fashion will account for 25-30 per cent of the total fashion retail market in India by FY2031, the report further predicts.
Currently present in over 150 countries, and having over 250 million social media followers, Shein generated over $2 billion in profits and nearly $45 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) in 2023.
