India’s retail sector gains momentum as sales rise by 8% in June 2025: RAI survey

With sales increasing by 8 per cent in June 2025 compared to the same period last year, India’s retail sector is gaining significant momentum, as per the 63rd Retail Business Survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), highlighting key developments across various retail segments and regions nationwide.
Following a Y-o-Y growth of nearly 4-5 per cent, India’s retail sales grew by 7 per cent in May and 8 per cent, notes Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, RAI. The beginning of the festive season at August-end is likely to influence the future demand trends. Retailers are sharply focused on how consumers’ non-discretionary spending as it creates hope for the consumption market, Rajgopalan adds.
Regionally, West India led the growth with a 10 per cent Y-o-Y increase. North India followed closely with a 9 per cent Y-o-Y rise, while South and East India recorded growths of 7 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.
In terms of categories, apparel and sporting goods were top performers, both achieving 10 per cent growth. Sales in consumer durables & electronics (CDIT), jewelry, and Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) categories increased by 9 per cent.
