Reliance brings Shein back to India under localized control

21 December 2024, Mumbai

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd, led by Isha Ambani, is spearheading the return of Shein to the Indian market, marking a significant move in the e-commerce sector. The Indian government has granted approval for Reliance to relaunch Shein’s products on a locally developed e-commerce platform. This comes after extensive reviews by the Ministries of IT, Electronics, and Home Affairs.

In a strategic arrangement, Reliance Retail will retain full ownership of the platform and oversee all operations. All infrastructure will be housed in India, and stringent measures ensure that Shein has no access to consumer data, guaranteeing adherence to Indian privacy and security regulations.

Shein, banned in 2020 due to national security concerns, was one of 300 Chinese apps restricted amidst rising India-China tensions. Its return reflects a shift in India’s approach to foreign e-commerce, as Reliance ensures compliance with Indian laws while providing a platform for local retail and manufacturing growth.

This partnership aims to blend global fashion with domestic retail, setting the stage for a revitalized fast-fashion market. Reliance Retail’s involvement is expected to enhance consumer options while supporting local economic development, signaling a new era in India’s e-commerce landscape.
