'Gandhi Nagar RMG Hub' to be transformed: Delhi government
29 March 2022, Mumbai:
Finally, the general infrastructure of Gandhi Nagar (Delhi), Asia's largest textile market and a hub for distributing garments across India, would be improved. The government of New Delhi has declared plans to turn Gandhi Nagar's textile market into a "grand garment center."
Notably, it will be rebranded and repositioned in the next five years to create additional jobs. This market has a daily turnover of more than Rs. 100 crore and employs one lakh people directly and another 2-3 lakh indirectly. Around 15,000 retail and wholesale establishments, as well as 5,000 small enterprises, serve India's entire domestic market in Gandhi Nagar and the surrounding districts.

Manish Sisodia, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister, complimented the Gandhi Nagar market, termed "Asia's largest ready-made garment market," while presenting a Rs. 75,800-crore budget to the Assembly for the fiscal year 2022-23.
"If people utilize any items manufactured here, they may declare with pride that this is ready-made in Delhi," the Minister remarked. This will necessitate legal recognition, infrastructural rehabilitation, the building of new service centers, and Gandhi Nagar's rebranding, marketing, and repositioning. In the next five years, this programme is likely to generate more than 40,000 additional job possibilities," the Deputy Chief Minister remarked.

"Delhi markets are not only the backbone of our economy, but also the source of our respect," he continued. Gandhi Nagar's readymade garment and textile market is one such market in Delhi."
Despite the efforts of local trade groups over a decade, this market, as well as others in the surrounding districts, lacks even basic amenities such as adequate parking, hygiene facilities, transportation, and so on. Thousands of merchants, manufacturers, and wholesalers from all over India come to the market.
