Mumbai-born titan of contemporary occasion wear, Kalki has expanded its operations in South India with the opening of a new store on Khader Nawaz Khan (KNK) Road in Chennai.
This move marks the brand's most significant physical deployment since securing a Rs 225 crore ($27 million) growth capital infusion from Lighthouse Funds earlier this year. By planting its flag in the heart of Chennai’s luxury district, Kalki is directly challenging regional heavyweights in a South Indian bridal market known for its high average order values (AOV) and deep-rooted appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship.
. The Chennai entry is a calculated play within an Indian ethnic wear sector projected to hit $30.4 billion by 2030, growing at a steady 6.9 per cent CAGR. Kalki is leveraging a ‘full-price’ retail model that prioritizes exclusive designs and customization over deep discounting. This strategy has already yielded industry-leading store-level EBITDA margins of 25 per cent to 33 per cent.
. ‘Chennai represents a pivotal demographic for us,’ says a Senior Business Head of the brand. ‘The South Indian consumer is increasingly seeking a fusion of traditional silhouettes with modern, globally-inspired aesthetics - a 'quiet luxury' niche that Kalki has perfected, he adds.
From Mumbai roots to a global 50-store network
This launch serves as the blueprint for Kalki’s ambitious ‘World Tour’ strategy, which aims to scale its retail footprint to over 50 experiential locations globally. While physical stores currently drive 70 per cent of the brand's revenue, Kalki is simultaneously reinforcing its digital fortress. Its D2C platform now contributes 35 per cent of total business volume.
Founded in 2007 by the Gupta brothers, Kalki Fashion has evolved from a single boutique in Mumbai into a global omnichannel powerhouse for premium Indian couture. The brand specializes in premium bridal, festive, and contemporary occasion wear for men and women, known for its ‘Merino Reimagined’ style blends and intricate hand-embroidery.
