The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has signed an MoU with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to elevate khadi to new heights and enhance its reach in domestic and international markets.
Signed by Vatsalya Saxena, CEO, KVIC and Tanu Kashyap, Director, NIFT, under the leadership of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the MoU facilitates NIFT’s collaboration with KVIC through the Khadi Centre of Excellence 2.0 (COEK 2.0) in order to make the Khadi brand more popular and marketable.
In addition, it assists khadi institutions in designing new garments, renovating Khadi Bhavans and developing new high-quality khadi products. The partnership leverages NIFT's expertise in fashion design, technology and market trends to make khadi more attractive to the youth, says Manoj Kumar, Chairman, KVIC.
Under the COEK, NIFT plans toestablish a hub in New Delhi and spoke centres in Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Guwahati, Panchkula, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar to strengthen the brand khadi.
In addition, initiatives like the Khadi Knowledge Portal, fashion shows, exhibitions, training program for Khadi institutions, design catalogues and the establishment of state-of-the-art sales outlets across the country will help further empower the brand Khadi. A dyeing studio in Assam will also contribute to this effort.
