10 February 2022, Mumbai:
The official US clothing import statistics is out, and it shows that, as expected, the country's import value increased dramatically in 2021 compared to 2020.
According to OTEXA, the United States imported US $ 81.59 billion worth of apparels in 2021, up 27.36 percent year on year, compared to US $ 64.06 billion in 2020.
In terms of volume, garment imports increased by 27.42 percent from 23,128.83 million SME in 2020 to 29,471.79 million SME in 2021. Imports were US $ 7.30 billion in December of this year, up over 51% year on year.
According to the most recent US Census Bureau data, official clothing retail sales in the United States hit US $ 198 billion in 2021. The research shows a 47 percent year-over-year increase in 2021 over 2020 and a 1.50 percent increase over 2019.
The increase in US apparel imports can be attributed to the return to normalcy that the consumer market experienced in 2021, particularly in the second half, as consumers did not refrain from spending money on clothing products during the holiday season, despite the fact that the market had been dry for nearly two years due to the pandemic.

Despite a significant increase in 2021, import values were below par and were unable to beat the statistics from 2019, when the United States imported US $ 83.70 billion in clothes.
