EU-UKRAINE Textile Initiative (EUTI) launched

10 May 2022, Mumbai:

That connection will be helpful to match supply and demand (e.g. there are many requests for supplies of fabrics), engaging in public procurement, and offering company-to-company support.

The service will be coordinated by EURATEX in close cooperation with UKRLEGPROM, the Ukrainian Association of enterprises of the textile & leather industry. Olena Garkusha, an experienced manager coming from the Ukrainian textile industry and now based in Brussels, will act as a contact point (This email address is being protected from spambots. EU exports to Ukraine reached €1.3 bln in 2021 (13th market), whereas imports from Ukraine reached €500 mln (21st place).

There is potential to expand that relationship, both in the short term - to respond to urgent needs, e.g. in the military and medical fabrics - but also in the long run; as a partner in the PEM Convention, Ukraine can play an important role in Europe’s textile and apparel supply chain. The proposed suspension of tariffs on imported products from Ukraine by the EU will offer further opportunities.

EURATEX Director-General Dirk Vantyghem commented: “Supporting the textile industry is our way to help the people of Ukraine. We encourage our European members to connect via EUTI and develop sustainable partnerships.”

Tetyana Izovit, President-Chief of the Board of UKRLEGPROM welcomed the initiative: “Today, we have many textile and apparel companies in Ukraine with expertise and skilled workers; they are able and willing to work with EU, but lack the contacts, customers, and supplies. EUTI will help them.”

So it can seem counterintuitive that the world’s largest brands could soon be creating outfits and accessories that will either partly or completely exist in a virtual space. But as much as it may seem like science-fiction, fashion brands are betting heavily on the metaverse.

Morgan Stanley projects that virtual fashion could be a US$ 50 billion opportunity by 2030, adding as much as 25% to the industry’s total earnings. For context, this is approximately 10x the value of Sri Lanka’s record-breaking export earnings from apparel exports for 2021.

Details of just how the metaverse will actually work and its implications for regions like South Asia, and countries like Sri Lanka in which apparel account for over 40% of national exports, remain unclear.

Uncovering the value behind the hype.

Weaving parallel skill sets.

Bridging the gaps virtually and IRL.
