Swedish home furnishing leader IKEA is significantly deepening its footprint in the Indian market, transitioning into a multi-format retail model to capture diverse consumer segments. As part of a comprehensive strategy to double its local investment to over Rs 20,000 crore by 2031, the company is diversifying its physical presence beyond traditional ‘blue-box’ destination stores. This evolution includes the upcoming inauguration of a city-center store at Phoenix Marketcity, Pune, which will occupy approximately 37,500 sq ft. This localized approach allows IKEA to integrate into high-traffic urban environments, effectively bridging the convenience gap for time-sensitive metropolitan shoppers.

Orchestrating an omnichannel ecosystem

IKEA’s expansion logic is anchored in a digital-first framework, where online platforms serve as the primary entry point for new territories. By launching e-commerce operations in cities like Pune well before establishing physical touchpoints, the retailer has successfully cultivated a loyal consumer base and mapped regional demand patterns. With digital sales now accounting for over 30 per cent of its total Indian revenue, the company is targeting a 40 per cent contribution through enhanced last-mile logistics and integrated online-to-offline shopping journeys. This omnichannel approach is essential for maintaining operational agility while the brand scales its store count from six to a projected 30 outlets nationwide.

Balancing localized growth with operational discipline

To achieve its target of sustained profitability by FY28, IKEA is refining its store sizes to align with varying catchment needs. Beyond compact city stores, the company is deploying mid-sized formats - ranging from 50,000 to 70,000 sq ft - to balance range accessibility with operational efficiency. Simultaneously, the retailer is intensifying its local sourcing initiatives, aiming to increase domestic production to support both home-grown demand and global export requirements. This strategy not only mitigates global supply chain complexities but also reinforces IKEA’s commitment to integrating deeper into the Indian manufacturing landscape, ensuring long-term competitiveness in a rapidly evolving home furnishing market.
