Functional apparel demand drives Uniqlo India performance

Japanese lifestyle brand Uniqlo demonstrated strong growth momentum in the Indian apparel market, recording a 44 per cent rise in top-line revenue to Rs 1,724 crore for the financial year ended March 2026. Net profit rose by 41 per cent to Rs 253 crore during the same period, underscoring robust consumer adoption of performance-driven apparel over traditional fast-fashion alternatives. Market analysts attribute this performance to high customer retention for technical lines such as Airism and Heattech across metropolitan commercial hubs. Indian consumers are increasingly reallocating household apparel budgets toward durable, high-utility wardrobe staples, enabling functional fashion providers to command strong unit economics, notes Kenji Inoue, Chief Financial Officer, Uniqlo India.

Physical retail footprint expansion

To maintain sales velocity and satisfy regional demand, Uniqlo is actively expanding its physical store network beyond tier-one metros into emerging urban centers. A recent retail deployment in tier-two markets showed that establishing large-format, experiential brick-and-mortar locations boosted offline sales conversion by 28 per cent while simultaneously lifting localized e-commerce traffic. However, real estate supply shortages for premium retail spaces present ongoing logistical hurdles. To counteract supply constraints, the brand is strengthening domestic manufacturing integration, currently sourcing over 30 per cent of its regional inventory through local production partners to streamline inventory cycles and support long-term revenue targets.

Targeting Rs 3,000 crore sales in three years

Operated by Fast Retailing, Uniqlo offers functional, minimal apparel across core men's, women's, and children's categories. Entering India in 2019, the brand aims for Rs 3,000 crore in sales within three years through nationwide retail expansion. The profitable subsidiary reinforces global operations through expanded local sourcing networks.
