The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC): Pins high hopes for spring apparel exports on the back of international demand tailwind

04 January 2022, Mumbai:

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) expects India’s apparel exports to reach historic highs in the coming months, thanks to buoyant demand and a 22% increase in export numbers in December 2021.

India’s readymade garment exports increased year on year from $1.2 billion in December 2020 to $1.46 billion in December 2021, ET Bureau reported. The country’s total apparel exports totalled $11.13 billion during the April to September period in 2021. This export growth has led the AEPC to have a positive outlook for Spring.

“We have a fast-growing order book from brands and buyers across the world,” said the AEPC’s chairman A Sakthivel on January 4, the Press Trust of India reported. “With the help of strong demand conditions, Indian apparel exports will see historic highs soon in the next coming months.”

The worst is over, growth is on its way,” claims Dr A Sakthivel on Tirupur - Apparel Resources India

Other factors which the AEPC expects to contribute to a further rise in apparel exports include two mega apparel schemes: the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme and the Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel scheme.

Trade deals between India and areas including the UK, U.S., EU, and UAE will also give Indian apparel an edge in the global export market, according to the AEPC

“Indian apparels have also bounced back,” said Sakthivel. “This is despite the fact that local restrictions impacted operations in the first quarter during the second wave of the pandemic. Apparel exporters have done exceedingly well in spite of challenges.”

He said that he would highlight the distressing situation of the Tirupur garment units.

Greetings to all exporters, Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), and Indian Embassy employees throughout the world who have contributed to this success. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Textiles, Piyush Goyal, called it a historic achievement and credited it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

Plan your exports knowing India's trading partners

In December 21 compared to December 20, India's garment exports climbed by 22.13 percent, while cotton yarn/fabrics/made-ups, handloom items, and other exports increased by 45.73 percent.

It is worth noting that garment exporters have been receiving solid orders for the last few months and are confident that they will continue to do so in the near future; nonetheless, they are wary of Omicron and are cautiously booking orders.

Apparel and textile items, in particular, are among the top ten major commodity groupings. The extraordinary export rise combined with orders in hand, according to A. Sakthivel, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), would assist India's exports to develop much more.
