18 October 2023, Mumbai

Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) export reached US$35.61 billion during January-September 2023, up 7.96% year-over-year. This growth is being driven by non-traditional markets, such as Japan, Australia, and India.
EU Remains Largest Export Destination, But Germany Shows Decline
The European Union (EU) remained Bangladesh's largest RMG export destination, accounting for 49.22% of the total export value. However, exports to Germany, the EU's largest market, declined by 12.58%. Other EU markets that showed a decline in exports included Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
US Exports Decline, UK and Canada Show Growth
The United States, Bangladesh's second-largest RMG export destination, saw a decline of 7.18% in exports during the January-September 2023 period.

However, exports to the United Kingdom and Canada increased by 14.92% and 6.27%, respectively.

China: 'De-Risking' not 'Decoupling'

21 October 2023, Mumbai

Despite Western Rhetoric
The United States, United Kingdom, and European Union continue to talk about reducing their reliance on China, but the reality is quite different. China has a wide-ranging influence that spans from basic goods to sophisticated industrial equipment.
China's Manufacturing Prowess
China has become a global leader in production thanks to its advanced manufacturing capabilities. It has shown its ability to overcome technological challenges, and its large-scale manufacturing and solid supply chains lay the foundation for future technological innovations.
Challenges of Diversifying Supply Chains
A report from RBC Wealth Management states that the complex nature of global supply chains, along with China's huge industrial sector and manufacturing skills, makes it unappealing and impractical for many multinational corporations to sever ties with China in the near future.
Limitations of On-Shoring and Friend-Shoring
Attempts to bring production closer to home in the West, often called “on-shoring” and “friend-shoring,” are not ready to meet these demands. Mexico offers a low-cost option for the US, but it can only produce less than 15% of what China can. Central American countries have problems such as socio-political conflicts, crime, and a lack of qualified workers and infrastructure, which make them unfit for this role.
In the EU, Turkey seems like a potential alternative, but its economic instability creates doubts about its ability to provide a stable and consistent supply environment. East European countries that are not part of the EU are also not suitable places to set up as friend-shoring hubs.
China's Trade Dominance to Continue
As it is, trade relations with China will continue. A slowdown in China's economic growth could lead to a reduction in trade, but this is likely to be a long-term process.

Jeanologia at Kingpins Amsterdam: Washed by the Atmosphere

17 October 2023, Mumbai

Jeanologia, a Spanish leader in eco-efficient technologies, will showcase its new technologies and processes at Kingpins Amsterdam, an event focused on the denim and knitwear industries. Jeanologia believes that air, digitalization, and automation are the keys to a fully sustainable and efficient textile industry.
Atmos: Atmospheric Washing Process
Jeanologia's Atmos atmospheric washing process allows for the natural aging of garments with a genuine vintage effect, without the use of water, pumice stones, or chemicals.
The process uses ozone under atmospheric conditions instead of water and chemicals, resulting in a denim garment with an authentic vintage look and an impressive contrast between light and dark areas.
The Atmos finishing process is also applied in color treatment, for example on sweatshirts and T-shirts.
G2 Ozone Technology
Jeanologia's breakthrough G2 ozone technology sets a new benchmark in the finishing processes of denim and knitwear. It allows production centers to greatly reduce the use of water and chemicals, achieving a natural wear tone more quickly and sustainably, and at a lower cost.
Benefits of Washed by the Atmosphere
The Washed by the Atmosphere concept offers a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce denim and knitwear garments. It reduces water use by up to 96%, eliminates all toxic byproducts, and reduces energy consumption by up to 25%.
It also makes it possible to eliminate traditional polluting processes, such as potassium permanganate, pumice, other harmful substances, and effluent discharges from the textile finishing industry.

Bangladesh RMG: Diversifies destination export markets

26 October 2023, Mumbai

Bangladesh's garment industry is diversifying its export markets to reduce its dependence on Europe and the United States.
Non-traditional markets, such as Asia, Latin America, and Africa, are growing in importance, accounting for 19.3% of garment exports in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, up from 17.4% a year ago. Exports to these markets grew by 25% year-on-year, compared to 11.4% growth in Europe and 3% growth in the United States.

State of affairs
This diversification is a positive development for Bangladesh's garment industry, making it more resilient to shocks and opening up new opportunities for exporters.
The government is supporting this diversification through export promotion campaigns, trade shows, and infrastructure and business environment improvements.
