Ikea accelerates India expansion

Furniture giant Ikea is accelerating its India expansion after a nationwide pandemic lockdown last year delayed the construction and opening of new stores in one of its fastest-growing markets.

The company opened its second India store on the outskirts of Mumbai in December and another in the southern city of Bengaluru is now on course to be completed in 12 months. Ikea, which opened it’s first store in Hyderabad in 2018, also has just two years left to raise the ratio of goods and materials sourced from India -- currently at 22 per cent -- to at least 30 per cent to meet local regulations. Betzel said that was “absolutely" achievable.

The Swedish furniture giant, known for its minimalistic aesthetics, is now making up for lost time as the Indian economy begins to rebound from the pandemic-induced recession and new COVID-19 infections slow down in the world’s second-worst hit nation.

CLRI to launch pan-India feet scanning survey

The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai plans to launch a pan-India feet scanning survey data to define Indian footwear size standards. Those will be included by shoe manufacturers in their size charts. By next year, India could have its own footwear sizing system, which is expected to reduce confusion while buying shoes of European Union, UK or US sizes.

The CLRI-led anthropometric survey will include 3D foot scans and measurement of feet. The project, scheduled to begin later this year and continue for 14 months, is supported by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the ministry of commerce, according to Indian media reports.

The survey will collect data that will be used to design a footwear sizing scheme based on Indian requirements, trace ethnic differences if any, determine characteristic age and size groups with special requirements, establish a size range for the Indian population, and produce a numerical database with specific length and width groupings.

The survey, estimated to cost ₹11 crore, will cover 94 districts around Agra, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Chennai, Jodhpur, Jorhat, Jalandhar, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna and Shillong.

The sizing scheme is expected to be ready by early 2022.

Ikea India to open new store in Bengaluru

Accelerating its India expansion, furniture giant Ikea plans to open a store in Bengaluru in the next 12 months. The company hopes to roll out shops in 30 cities within seven years. It opened its second India store on the outskirts of Mumbai in December.

Ikea’s first store was opened in Hyderabad in 2018. The store has just two years left to raise the ratio of goods and materials sourced from India -- currently at 22 per cent -- to at least 30 per cent to meet local regulation. The Swedish furniture giant is now making up for lost time as the Indian economy rebounds from the pandemic-induced recession and new COVID-19 infections slowdown in the country.

Ikea recently acquired space in Noida, for a $753 million multipurpose mall that should be ready in about three and a half years. Development on a second store close to India's national capital will begin this year and two smaller centers in Mumbai will open in 2021, in sync with its global expansion spree as it adds stores at a record pace despite worldwide virus restrictions.
