Reliance Retail has entered into a long-term partnership to launch the American fashion brand Gap to India.

The deal makes Reliance Retail, the official retail for Gap across all channels in India. Reliance Retail will introduce the brand’s latest offerings in India through a mix of exclusive brand stores, multi-brand store expressions and digital commerce platforms.

The partnership will help Gap leverage its position as a leading casual lifestyle brand, explore Reliance Retail’s competencies in omnichannel retail, expand local manufacturing and drive sourcing.

24 June 2022, Mumbai:

The Uttar Pradesh government plans to attract more investments by building new textile and apparel parks in the state. This will help the government to transform the sector from unorganized to organized.

It will also boost exports by offering all facilities in one place.

As per FY2021-22 data, textiles and apparel accounted for 9 percent of the state’s exports during the year and totaled Rs 12,996 crore.

They were the third most exported items from the state after electronic and electrical products.

Compared to 2020-21, UP’s textile and apparel exports grew 40 percent. The jump was more than the rise seen in exports of electronics and electrical products as well as meat during the same period. Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad emerged amongst the state’s top 10 export cities with 41 percent and 11 percent shares respectively.

The apparel park in Noida will be set up with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore. It will house 115 export-oriented units of readymade garments. Commercial production in the park will begin by September 2025.

The government also plans to make five textile and apparel parks through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. For this, the tender process will begin after identifying land by September next year. The aim is to begin production by 2026.

The government will set up flatted factories in or around Kanpur Nagar, Gorakhpur, and Agra. It will also build a world-class textile park at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore under the PM Mitra scheme.

18 June 2022, Mumbai:

Garment exporters have appealed to the Union government to provide benefits under the Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) in cash directly to the exporters and not as scrips.

Vijay Jindal, President, Garment Exporters and Manufacturers Association, said, the RoSCTL scheme provides rebate against the taxes, levies, etc. that are already paid by the exporters on the inputs.

These rebate has been converted into scrips that are tradable i.e. exporters can sell scrips to the importers and importers, in turn, can pay import duty with these purchased scrips as an alternative to cash import duty payments.

While it was in discount earlier also, now the discount has gone up from 3 per cent to about 20 per cent on the scrips. This discounting of scrips benefits importers, who are taking undue advantage at the cost of exporters.He, therefore, urged the government to restart cash reimbursement

Harish Ahuja, Executive Member, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), adds, “At present, demand for such scrips is very less as exporters are finding it difficult to find enough importers who can buy the scrips obtained under the RoSCTL scheme.

Lack of demand means that importers offer to buy scrips only at a steep discount of up to 20 per cent. If not addressed, India may lose its edge in global textile markets.

The West Bengal government plans to boost the state’s garment industry by setting up an apparel hub on 10 acres in Maheshtala.

As per a Knitting Industry report the hub will span a built-up area of 12 lakh sq. ft. and will be set up under the aegis of MSME and the textile department.

The park will create over 1 lakh jobs for thousands of people residing in the neighborhood of Nungi and in adjoining Metiabruz. It will accommodate around 30,000 people, says Rajesh Pandey, Secretary-MSME and Textiles. The investment in the project will be to the tune of several lakh crores, he adds

The project will be developed on a develop-build-finance-operate-and-transfer (DBFOT) model that gives private operators the right to operate the hub.

The state government is offering a parcel of land along with a boundary wall on lease for 99 years for developing the hub. The government will select interested private partners by this week.

India’s official body of apparel exporters, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) will participate in three international fairs in July and August this year.

As per an Apparel Resources report, these three fairs include ‘Pure London’ in Pure Origin at Olympia London, UK from July 17-19, 2022; India Tex Trend Fair (ITTF) in Tokyo, Japan from July 20-22, 2022 and Sourcing at Magic in Las Vegas, US from August 07-10, 2022.

US, UK and Japan together had a share of more than 38 per cent of India’s total apparel exports market, valuing $6.8 billion in calendar year 2021. UK imports from India in 2021 totaled $1,092.1 million, registering a growth of 12.6 per cent.

Indian apparel exports to the US totaled $4,497.3 million in 2021 registering a growth of more than 40 per cent compared with last year. Japan emerged as the third largest importer with knitted garments dominating imports.

27 June 2022, Mumbai:

Over last six months, urban Indian consumers have reduced their expenditure on apparel, fuel and dining out due to rising inflation levels, as per a survey by YouGov.

Compared to 12 months ago, 46 per cent of urban Indians said, their cost of living has increased to some extent as inflation is driving up prices of daily essentials. Meanwhile, 46 per cent said their cost of living has gone up a lot compared to 12 months ago.

YouGov surveyed 1,013 urban respondents online in India between 7 June 7 and 10, 2022 using YouGov’s panel of over 20 million people worldwide.

Retail of inflation measured by consumer price index (CPI) grew sharply to 7.79 per cent in April. CPI jumped to 7.79 per cent in April compared to 6.95 per cent in March while food inflation jumped to 8.38 per cent from 7.68 per cent in March, according to government data released in June.

As a result, households are crimping back on spends they deem unnecessary.

Clothing topped the list with more than a third saying they have reduced spends on apparels and accessories. Comparatively, lesser cutbacks have been reported on staple essential food items, broadband subscriptions and household essentials, perhaps because this is more of a necessity than a luxury, according to the survey findings.

Luxury men’s and women’s fusion wear brand Falguni Shane Peacock has expanded with a new flagship store in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills. The retail space was designed by celebrity interior designer Gauri Khan.

As per a Fashion Network report, the store spanning 6,500 sqft houses the brand couture and ready-to-wear lines. It has a color scheme of white, gold, green, and rose, with a marble floor, inlay work, and gold-framed racks.

Khan, who conceptualized the space, had already worked with the brand to design its store in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda district and took the same opulent yet restrained aesthetic into her work for the new Hyderabad store. To bring her and the brand’s vision to life, Khan worked with architect VasundharaSampath of Philosophy Design Studio and SanjeevithaBhagwath of PMC- TheWorkz.
