Overseas orders to Tiruppur surge as demand diverts from Sri Lanka

Export orders to the textile hub of Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu are surging with demand diverting to India from Sri Lanka owing to the economic and political crisis in the island nation.

The current crisis in Sri Lanka has crippled its apparel manufacturing sector, says Raja M Shanmugam, President, Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA).
It has compelled global brands to divert few orders to India. These orders are being placed for the upcoming fall season. Global brands such as Zara, Mango and H&M place orders with Asian countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam.

As Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia already have huge orders in their hands brands are concentrating on the Indian market.
However, high cotton and yarn prices are a major concern for the Indian textile trade, adds Shanmugam.
