With a day dedicated to sustainability, the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) that held from October 11-15, at the Pragati Maidan in Delhi showcased the fact that iconic Indian fashion shows today have moved beyond the glam quotient into practical sustainable practices such as zero waste, reuse and promoting local shopping and artisans around the country.

Along with its focus on sustainability, LFW in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India FDCI and Reliance Brands (RBL), also showcased the latest collections from the industry’s top designers and glamorous runway shows by models and actresses at this five-day fashion extravaganza.
Some sustainable fashion designers like Amit Gupta Sustainable, Swati Kapoor, Kaveri, Swati Vijaivargie, Ka-Sha, Verandah, 11.11/eleven, Payal Pratap, Abraham & Thakore, and R Elan showcased their collections on Day 2 of the event along with a host of other glamorous designers.
Top designer’s glam collections on the ramp
LFW had an interesting Day 1 with designer Ashish N Soni giving a fun twist on a dark academia style with 1980’s proportions and whimsical prints with a much-talked about illuminated runway that revealed cartons of fruit as female models launched down the runway wearing fruit printed mini-dresses and suits with shorts.
Male models also had the same colorful theme as they wore blazers with fruity embroidery and vintage style, rust-colored trousers, and clashing prints. Soni’s wearable collection had a modern outlook on vintage semi-formal wear and focused on making the overcoat the outerwear staple of the season.
High profile
Tarun Tahiliani’s artistically styled contemporary Indian wear and signature silhouettes embracing a palette of new colors closed Day1 with an innovative collection called ‘A Celebration of Self-Expression’ that celebrated the upcoming season of festivity.
Tahiliani’s Indo-western fusion of draped sarees, gilets, co-ord sets, lehengas, jumpsuits, corset blouses, gowns, dazzling dupattas, and shararas for the modern women were showstoppers on the runway.
Indian males will be able to buy an innovative wedding wear collection from Tasva, a collaboration between Tarun Tahiliani and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail that embodies the designer’s signature style of intricately blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary design.
Eponymous designer Bibhu Mohapatra brought New York’s glamour to Delhi at the finale show with a host of celebrity showstoppers. Inspired by his late mother, he mixed modern silhouettes with sparkling details for a versatile evening wear collection.
Star power sizzles the catwalk
Day 3 of the event saw Dia Mirza wearing a structured the-piece coordinated set in pristine white for talented young designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi who presented their collection in collaboration with Raga from Titan.
Dia’s monochromatic all-white look had heavy textural work adding dimension to the collection. Athiya Shetty was the showstopper on the same day wearing an outfit from the sartorial collection of the talented designer duo Shivan and Narresh.
Bollywood connect
The growing popularity of Bollywood actresses walking the ramp continued on the Day 5 Finale, as Ananya Panday wore Bibhu Mohapatra’s ensemble of a black top paired with matching shorts that was highlighted by a floral-patterned blazer and Liza Haydon wore a pastel-hued glamorous gown with a deep neckline adorned with delicate pearl embellishments.
Bipasha Basu was also back on the ramp in a flowing gown accessorized by a graceful cape with her post-pregnancy curves as a celebration of body positivity that breaks stereotypes.
As part of their tradition of encouraging upcoming talent and a new league of designers, Nexa and LFW in association with FDCI chose designer Sushant Abrol and his brand Countrymade the winner of fashion design contest.
Abrol’s collection was shortlisted from five brands by a jury of experts including designers Ashish Soni and Dhruv Kapoor.
Much-sought after
The LFW week which collaborates with FDCI as a bi-annual five-day fashion week with the summer edition taking place in Mumbai in March and the winter festive edition happening in October in Delhi, is a much-awaited event that adds global glamour to the Indian apparel industry.
