Carrefour expands Indian presence with Greater Noida flagship

French retail titan Carrefour has officially recommenced its Indian consumer operations through a high-profile franchise agreement with Dubai-based Apparel Group. The collaboration kicked off with a massive 50,000-plus sq-ft flagship hypermarket at H&S Mall in Greater Noida West. This launch marks a definitive structural evolution from Carrefour's earlier wholesale-focused business model that wrapped up in 2014. Driven by surging urban spending power and a retail landscape hurtling toward a projected US$2.36 trillion valuation by 2030, the partnership aims to capture massive middle-class consumption through localized assortments and international standards. The Noida region is a fantastic, growing market with a young population holding high spending potential, notes Nilesh Ved, Chairman, APPCORP Holding and Owner of Apparel Group.

Targeting multi-format retail growth

Building upon the initial hypermarket success, the joint venture has outlined a target of establishing approximately 50 stores across India over the next three years. Rather than replicating the sprawling Greater Noida footprint everywhere, subsequent store rollouts will diversify into 10,000-sq-ft supermarkets and compact convenience formats tailored for Tier-II and Tier-III urban clusters. Patrick Lasfargues, Executive Director - International Partnership, Carrefour, emphasizes that supply chain localization remains central to their long-term viability. What the brand aims to do in India is to have Carrefour private labels manufactured locally, while also evaluating export pipelines over the next five years, states Lasfargues. Concurrently, the brand is integrating an omnichannel framework to bridge physical store inventory with digital and quick-commerce delivery requirements.

Apparel Group operates over 2,600 stores globally across 40 countries, managing a robust portfolio of fashion and lifestyle brands. Founded in France in 1959, Carrefour is a global retail leader managing a 15,000-store network with €91.5 billion in annual sales, targeting sustained profitability through localized franchise synergies.
