Bangladesh is back to being the world’s second-largest apparel exporter: Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) report

14 February 2022, Mumbai:

Bangladesh is back to being the world’s second-largest apparel exporter. Latest Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) statistics show Bangladesh’s apparel exports surged 30.30 per cent to $23.99 billion from July to January 2021-22.

Knitwear exports surged 32.89 per cent to $13.27 billion. On the other hand, export of woven garments surged 27.23 per cent to $10.71 billion.

In 2021, Bangladesh’s apparel export earnings grew 30.36 per cent to $35.81 billion. The country’s earnings from apparel exports surpassed Vietnam’s export earnings of $32.75 billion, reveals the General Statistics Office.

The surge in apparel export earnings was dominated by knitwear exports that rose 37.72 per cent to $19.59 billion compared to $14.22 billion in the same period last year. During the year, Bangladesh’s exports of woven products also surged 22.46 per cent to $16.21 billion, says Faruque Hassan, President, BGMEA.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers + Exporters Association Adds New Pres – Sourcing Journal

Lower prices, on-time delivery boost orders

In January 2021, Bangladesh’s apparel export earnings grew 42.71 per cent to $4.08 billion, says a Textile Today report. This was the highest ever single month apparel exports achieved by the country.

Exports of both knitwear and woven garments grew 40 per cent year-over-year. Despite, pandemic related challenges, exporters showed tremendous resilience and efforts to boost business. One reason, Bangladesh managed to increase exports in 2021 was the ability of manufacturers to keep factories operational during the year.

Bangladesh regains global position as the second largest RMG exporter

Also, exporters accepted orders at lower prices and shipped them on time, adds Hassan.

ALSO READ: BGMEA president, Bangladesh Apparel Exports Expected to hit $50 billion

Exporters also upgraded their technology, production capacity and product quality, which helped gain more orders, Hassan explains. Their commitment to execute bulk orders encouraged many buyers to relocate purchases to Bangladesh.

Chinese investment crucial to sustain growth

Exporters currently have enough work orders to retain their second position in the global apparel market, adds Shahiduallah Azim, Vice-President, BGMEA.

He hopes Bangladesh apparel industry reaches new heights in the next five years. However, to achieve this, Bangladesh needs to attract Chinese investment as well as buyers relocating their purchase destinations, he feels. They need to veer Chinese investors away from Vietnam and Myanmar.

Cautious planning, skill development needed

Azim believes, the recent leap in Bangladesh’s garment exports may not last and advises exporters to be cautious while planning capacity and expansion. Exporters should also make a qualitative shift in their business through diversification, innovation, design, technology up-gradation and capacity building.

They should encourage more skill development amongst workers and professionals and negotiate prices cautiously, he adds. Maintaining safety and sustainability will also help exporters maintain and improve current production standards, he sums up.

The Joint Apparel Association Forum of Sri Lanka: GSP+ is critical for Sri Lanka's pandemic vulnerable groups

12 February 2022, Mumbai:

Much has been said of the potential economic costs to Sri Lanka, of losing the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus trade concessions to the European Union (EU).

While these costs will be high, the social and human costs are likely to be even greater. Considering official statistics for 2021, available up to end November, the EU was Sri Lanka’s single largest export market for 2021, accounting for nearly a quarter (24.1%) of the latter’s total merchandise exports of US$ 11.1 billion.

Given the EU’s importance to Sri Lanka, the loss of preferential tariffs for Sri Lanka’s exports to the EU through GSP+ previously, in 2010, had a substantial adverse impact on the Sri Lankan economy. This likely led to an increase in poverty and income inequality as per academic studies (for example, Bandara and Naranpanawa, 2014).

Alpha Apparels wins 'Best Exporter Apparel' under medium category at PEA | Daily News

At present, given the ramifications of the pandemic, the consequences of the loss of GSP+ could be far more dire, leading to increase in unemployment, poverty, vulnerability and inequality, as well as loss of improvements achieved in female empowerment.

According to the World Bank’s estimates, Sri Lanka’s poverty rate rose from 9.2% in 2019 to 11.7% in 2020, putting more than 500,000 additional people in poverty.

Currently, SMEs account for approximately 45% or nearly half of Sri Lanka apparel manufacturing facilities and provide employment to around 50,000 employees.

Many apparel manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka are located outside urban areas and industrial zones and are crucial in generating rural employment.

SMEs are particularly vital in this regard since due to their relatively smaller scale, which requires less workers, a high percentage of these factories are located in less-populated and lagging regions.

Many other sectors in Sri Lanka rely on the apparel industry, given its heavy presence across the island.

ALSO READ:

These include logistics and transport providers, raw material suppliers as well as small-scale businesses providing food and refreshments.

In addition, several cottage industries, such as producers of carpets and pillow covers, depend on apparel factories in their neighbourhoods for raw material (in the form of waste fabric).

If the industry is to suffer a downturn due to loss of GSP+, this entire economic ecosystem too will suffer adverse trickle-down effects.

Given the pandemic’s unprecedented impact, GSP+ to the EU is critical for Sri Lanka and its export sectors at present.

Final Report of Texworld Evolution Paris

17 February 2022, Mumbai:

The February 2022 edition marked the return of the international sourcing platform Texworld Evolution Paris in its classic configuration.

After two years, the professionals of the fashion industry were able to meet the international manufacturers selected by the Messe Frankfurt France team in the Hall 4 of the Paris-Le Bourget Exhibition Center.

Texworld Evolution Paris - Home | Facebook

For this re-launch edition, which brought together 200 exhibitors from 16 countries, the four exhibitions of Texworld Evolution Paris welcomed 2,800 professional visitors over three days.

The participation was particularly satisfying, given the limitations imposed by the health crisis on international travellers, especially from China and India.

These figures show that the textile and clothing offer proposed by the platform was expected by the professionals. In the opinion of the first visitors, the climate that prevailed from the opening was very clearly business-oriented.

Frederic Bougeard

« The demand expressed by fashion, textile and clothing professionals remained very strong for us to keep our platform running in spite of the constraints, underlines Frédéric Bougeard, President of Messe Frankfurt France. We have naturally responded to this expectation by providing the most complete overview of the international offer currently available on the market in the context we are experiencing.

or

Texworld Paris for textile sourcing, the Texworld Evolution Paris trade fairs have recovered their international scope: the share of foreign visitors has indeed reached 65%, for 35% of French.
