Silk dhoti producers in Tamil Nadu have stopped production due to a surge in yarn prices in the market. Silk dhotis are largely weaved across Salem, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Erode, and Tirupur districts in the state.
These dhotis are exported to Singapore, Malaysia, the US, Dubai, Sri Lanka, and the UK.
The finished silk dhotis are also sent to Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry, Maharashtra, New Delhi, and Gujarat for sales.

Over five lakh power loom weavers in the state are involved in the production of silk dhotis, says M Chandrasekaran, a silk dhoti producer from Kondalampatty in Salem city.
The business is worth around Rs 20 crore with handloom weavers generating Rs 2 crore business daily. All these weavers stopped silk dhoti production after silk yarn prices shot up.
One kilogram of silk yarn was sold for Rs 3,500 until the first week of February, The same yarn is now sold for Rs 7,500 adds Chandrasekaran.
