India must aim to be among the top three cotton producers in the world, according to the Textile Minister
8th October 2021, Mumbai:
Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Textiles, Commerce & Industry, has stated that India must strive to be among the top three cotton producers in the world (from its present position) and boost cotton production to 800-900 kg per hectare from the existing level of 457 kg per hectare.
He expressed regret that India's production is so low in contrast to the world average.
He was speaking at the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) Interactive Cotton Webinar, which was hosted electronically in conjunction with the 2nd Anniversary of Global Cotton Day, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, and CITI-CDRA Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
"Cotton: Moving Beyond Conventional Paradigms" was the subject of the Webinar. Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Minister of State for Textiles and Railways, spoke at the occasion, as did Upendra Prasad Singh, Secretary (Textiles).
Though several structural difficulties on the raw material front have been handled, T. Rajkumar, Chairman of the CITI, appealed to the Minister that the Technology Mission on Cotton II (TMC II) is one structural issue on the raw material front that is still pending.
He stated that the lack of technical assistance is resulting in low production and that the Minister of Textiles should address the issue as soon as possible since TMC II might assist cotton growers in boosting their output.
Both sessions included prominent speakers, moderators, and topic experts from across the world who presented their unique ideas and professional opinions on increasing the sustainability, quality, and productivity of Indian cotton. They believed that India had all of the necessary resources to position itself as a worldwide leader in the cotton textile value chain.
The only thing India now needs is stakeholders' desire to adopt global best agricultural methods, high-quality seeds, new technology, and other factors that put other cotton-growing countries ahead of India. The experts' debates were well received by the audience in all of the sessions.
He added that poor productivity is due to a lack of technological support and that the Minister of Textiles should solve the matter as quickly as possible since TMC II might help cotton producers increase their output.
Speakers, moderators, and topic experts from around the world presented their unique ideas and professional opinions on how to improve the sustainability, quality, and productivity of Indian cotton in both sessions.
