Today (7 October) is World Cotton Day, which is observed all around the world. "There's more to cotton than you think," is this year's theme.

Virtual Interactive Cotton Webinar is being held in India by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI). The webinar will be inaugurated by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Textiles, Commerce and Sector, who will connect with the textiles and garment industry.

By working tirelessly, CITI's Cotton Development & Research Association (CDRA) has completed 50 years of contribution to the Indian cotton sector.

On World Cotton Day, Pratibha Syntex, one of India's most sustainable clothing producers, recounts its organic journey - Vasudha Primo. Vasudha Primo, an extra-long staple organic cotton fibre created by a group of farmers in the tribal belt of MP, India, is based on the concepts of regenerative organic cotton and the United Nations' sustainable development objectives.

The fibre, which comes from the Petlawad area, is 14 per cent thinner, 26 per cent longer, and 30 percent stronger than other cotton fibres on the market.

Vasudha, a division of Pratibha Syntex, was founded in 1999. Around 35,000 farmers are linked with Pratibha Syntex as part of the initiative.

Pratibha will realise its objective of being a global leader in sustainable textile goods and processes by building a stronger and more dependable network.

Vasudha developed a sustainable fibre that is biodegradable and uses 91% less water when growing as a result of improving the socio-economic situation of the farmers. Because it is an organic fibre, no chemical fertilisers or pesticides are used in its production.

This, in turn, is responsible for improving soil health. Animal husbandry was also aided by initiatives such as the installation of a cow watershed. The clothes created from this fibre have a natural softness to them.

The cloth is gentle on the skin and maintains its look after washing. Tees and shirts benefit from a non-pilling, long-lasting fibre.

"The Vasudha Primo's peculiarity is that, unlike other competitor fibres, it focuses equally on the quality of the fibre and the quality of life of the farmers who grew it," stated Shreyaskar Chaudhary, MD, Pratibha Syntex.
