T Rajkumar is chairman of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI). Rakesh Mehra has been elected as deputy chairman. Ashwin Chandran is the vice chairman.

Rajkumar is the chairman of the Textile Sector Skill Council. He is a director at the National Skill Development Corporation and the former chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association. He is also the chairman and managing Trustee of Global Pathway School, Coimbatore, and secretary of Nachimuthu Gounder Rukmani Ammal Charitable Trust, Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, apart from being actively involved in various industry bodies and educational institutions. He also serves as an independent director in Coimbatore Smart City.

Additionally, Rajkumar is a member of the Governing Council of Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council and South India Textile Research Association, Coimbatore.

Rakesh Mehra is the chairman of Banswara Syntex. Since 2018, he has been the president of the Indian Spinners Association. He is the former chairman of the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council. Ashwin Chandran is the chairman and managing director of Precot Meridien. He is also a member of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council.

Raymond is seeing an uptick in demand by at least 30 per cent for its lifestyle business.

Covid had a huge effect since stores were shut and customers could not visit. But as soon as the stores were opened, they returned, and that was significantly prominent in Raymond’s apparel business. The fall in rupee is helping in exports that are dollar-denominated but the group is also present in European and the UK markets. In those geographies, too, currencies are falling and therefore that offsets the gains. Raymond will try to focus more on dollar-denominated customers to mitigate the currency impact.

Raymond is seeing strong traction in the real estate segment too. The management is in the process of subsidiarizing this business and will be undertaking projects on the JV/JDA route and not buying additional land.

One is Grace, which marks the company’s entry into the prewashed sheets category. Earth Lover is a special range of sustainably made towels, and Trident Specials is an assortment of towels offering both utility and eye-catching designs.

Trident has also made additions to its Jiva health and wellness collection, which consists of microbe-resistant products with lifetime odor-free attributes. In addition, the company has temperature-regulating sheets and a bath assortment featuring its patented Air Rich technology, which helps create towels that stay soft wash after wash.

The three keys for Trident’s product introductions are utility, comfort, and sustainability. From using fibers made from recycled materials to make products with the finest cotton-like Supima and Egyptian, Trident has been constantly raising the bar year after year. Trident is a vertically integrated textile (yarn, bath, and bed linen) and paper (wheat straw-based) manufacturer and is one of the largest players in the home textile space in India.

Textile units in Surat are struggling to revive from the current crisis of sluggish demand despite the onset of the festive season.

Surat is India’s biggest manmade fabric hub. Though textile units witnessed some spurt in demand ahead of Navratri festivities, this has not been enough to clear existing stock. Apart from subdued demand, units functioning at every stage of the textile value chain in Surat are facing challenges of increased input costs.

Hardly a quarter of enquiries are being translated into actual buying. In most cases, sellers and buyers do not agree on prices and hence business does not happen. Production cost has gone up drastically, making it difficult for Surat-based units to supply fabrics at lower prices.

Buyers want newly designed fabric and hence most textile units are struggling to clear inventories. Margins of weavers have also reduced due to increased input costs. Over the past couple of months, there has been a marginal increase in demand but not enough to run weaving units at full capacity.

The Rs 80,000 crore Surat textile industry produces over 40 million meters of fabric a day. The cluster houses more than seven lakh power looms and over 400 processing units.

Telangana, a state in India known for its unique textile crafts has been listed by Unesco.

These include Siddipet Gollabhama saris, Himru weaving and Gongadi sheep wool blankets. Unesco has listed the histories and legends behind the textiles, especially the strenuous efforts put in by weavers. A lot of effort has gone into identification and collating a representative sample of Indian textile crafts from across the country that merit special consideration. Siddipet Gollabhama saris have motifs are woven on the pallu (the loose end draped over the shoulder) and on the lower border but none on the upper border. The body of the sari is plain or has motifs. These saris are made of cotton. Another important feature of Gollabama saris is that the motifs are not woven on the loom but made entirely by hand.

Telangana has revised the intricate and near extinct Pitambari saris, Siddipet Gollabhamasarees, Teliarumal weaving, HIMRU weaving and Armoor silk saris. Now, the state is coming up with Ramappa saris to commemorate the Ramappa temple being recognized as an Unesco World Heritage Site.

Handmade textiles appear to be fast dwindling in the face of the demands of modernity. In this context, it is absolutely essential that handmade textiles are taken stock of, and that they are properly mapped in all their diversity.
