The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global guidance document adopted by world leaders at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. Our efforts to make Better Cotton a mainstream sustainable commodity are intrinsically aligned to the SDGs.

Through the Better Cotton Standard System we aim to embed social, environmental and economic sustainability into cotton production around the globe. Better Cotton embraces the SDGs holistically and is inspired to be part of a global community working to make the world a better place.

Over the last year, we conducted a mapping exercise whereby we compared Better Cotton’s organisational objectives to the 17 SDGs and related targets to determine where Better Cotton is driving the SDGs in a tangible way. We used the following criteria to determine the SDGs where Better Cotton is making robust contributions.

There is existing data or evidence that demonstrates Better Cotton’s contribution on at least one of a goal’s targets.

Better Cotton anticipates, in the short to medium term, to have evidence that demonstrates our contribution on at least one of the goal’s targets.

There will be no January trade shows in Frankfurt, Germany. After the Munich Fabric Start show was cancelled, the organisers of the Frankfurt Fashion Week too were forced to cancel their five events, scheduled on January 18-20: Premium, Neonyt, Seek, The Ground and Val:ue, a new event open to the public.

A decision that was all the more unpleasant because, a little more than a week ago, the organisers seemed particularly optimistic. The Neonyt show alone would have hosted more than 150 exhibitors.

In the last few days, the Covid situation in Germany and neighbouring countries has deteriorated rapidly due to the lightning-fast spread of the Omicron variant.

According to the events’ organisers, Messe Frankfurt and the Premium Group, the decisions taken on Tuesday by the federal government and the regional authorities, as well as the forecasts made by the government’s pool of experts, left them with no alternative.

Many companies had already banned their employees, whether trade show exhibitors or visitors, from travelling, in order to ensure their safety given the escalation in the number of Covid cases.

Fiber and yarn producers expressed interest in trying out a counter-trade scheme in trading these products. Trade returns are considered as an alternative for market penetration in the midst of trade barriers that are applied in the destination country.

Fiber products such as staple fibers of viscose rayon and single yarn are a few of the textile products offered by Indonesia in a countertrade agreement with Turkey, one of Indonesia's main trading partners. Secretary-General of the Indonesian Fiber and Filament Yarn Producers Association (APSyFI) Redma Gita Wiraswasta said Turkey is one of the important export destinations for synthetic fiber and yarn products.

“Indeed Turkey is an important market for our synthetic fibers and yarns. If a counter-trade scheme is possible, we are very interested in exploring it," said Redma, Thursday (16/12/2021).

Redma said Turkey accounts for 10 percent of fiber and filament yarn exports. Trade compensation is an alternative considering that several Indonesian fiber products are subject to anti-dumping duties (BMAD) in that country.

"If you use the usual export scheme, the imposition of BMAD will be hampered," he said.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that exports of artificial filaments under HS code 54 to Turkey reached US$95.94 million in 2019, then decreased to US$41.59 million in 2020. As for October 2021, exports of artificial filaments to Turkey were worth US$1. $25.40 million.

Exports for staple fiber in HS code 55 also show fluctuations. Exports touched US$365.62 million in 2019 and then fell in 2020 to 169.60 million. However, exports rose again to US$227.35 million as of October 2021.

Luxury British store chain Selfridges is being sold to a Thai retailer and an Austrian property company in a deal that a source close to the matter said was worth around 4 billion pounds ($5.37 billion).

Thailand's Central Group and Austrian real estate company Signa Group, which already jointly own major department stores across Europe, said on Thursday they had struck a deal for the chain best known for its Oxford Street store in London.

The Canadian wing of the billionaire Weston family bought Selfridges for nearly 600 million pounds in 2003.

Central Group, owned by the billionaire Chirathivat family, and Austrian investor Rene Benko's Signa together own department stores in Germany, Italy, Denmark and Switzerland.

Founded in 1908, the Selfridges Group employs 10,000 people and owns 25 stores worldwide, including in major cities in England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Canada.

Signa and Central will take over 18 of the 25 stores and hope to build a luxury hotel alongside the Oxford Street flagship, the source said, adding that seven department stores in Canada were not part of the package.

With Selfridges, they hope to build a luxury department store empire, complemented by an online business.

The source said they plan to increase sales to 8 billion euros ($9.1 billion) by 2024 - including more than 1 billion online - from around 5 billion now.

The conglomerate will be managed from a holding company in London, with the potential for an eventual stock exchange listing, although local management of the stores in other countries will remain, the source said.

Central opened its first department store in 1956, growing to become Thailand's largest mall owner with about 2,400 retail stores. It has an e-commerce joint venture with China's JD.com (9618.HK) and stakes in Southeast Asia ride-hailer Grab Holdings .

Central has been present in Europe since 2011 when it bought the upmarket Italian department store chain La Rinascente SpA for 205 million euros. In 2013, it also acquired Illum, Denmark’s oldest department store.

In 2015, Central bought a majority stake in three luxury department stores in Germany from Signa. Central and Signa last year together bought Swiss luxury store Globus and other assets for more than 1 billion Swiss francs ($1.1 billion).

Central and Signa have also teamed up with Japanese retail giant Aeon Co to develop an e-commerce platform for one of the fastest-growing online sports retail markets in the world.

Benko made a name for himself as a property investor. He bought the iconic Chrysler Building in New York City in partnership with property firm RFR Holding LLC for about $150 million in 2019.

Textile waste becomes a big homework for designers, to create environmentally friendly products. A designer in Malang, managed to do it, by producing clothes made from jeans waste. The inspiration came to Feby Ayusta, precisely when he was slumped due to the beginning of the pandemic and then his business almost went bankrupt.

Apart from losing many employees, his clothes were not sold because no exhibitions were held. In fact, during exhibitions, his designs are often sold out. When he managed to make a collection of unused clothes in his closet which was dominated by jeans,

into clothes that had more selling value because they were unique and not marketable, Feby started his new business.

Feby supplies unsold jeans that she bought at a secondhand clothing store. The fashion waste is then washed again and made up. Then they are designed and sewn into outers, jackets, and vests, which have a much higher selling value.

Not only did he manage to survive the pandemic, he managed not to produce waste from the clothes he made.

"I have a lot of jeans trash, I also have a lot of fashion trash, it's really piling up. I mix and match during the pandemic, making clothes from fashion trash. So keep working, produce something useful too, I really sort the trash," he said.

Due to its complexity and limited edition, one piece of clothing can take up to two days to manufacture. Each shirt is sold starting at Rp. 385 thousand to Rp. 750 thousand.

Now Feby is focusing on selling through the digital market. Sales of his sustainable fashion are selling well outside the city, even abroad.

Based on global data, as much as 92 tons of textile waste is generated per year. The concept of sustainable fashion or sustainable fashion, can reduce textile waste in the environment.

The new facilities, which stand out for the simplicity of their lines, broad open spaces, energy efficiency and sustainability credentials, have been designed to reinforce the brand’s essence and support its flat organisational structure.

The works are set to begin in January and last for roughly two years

A new 170,000m2 building will house the Zara sales and design teams within Inditex’s complex in Arteixo. Entailing an investment of €238 million, the works are due to get underway in January, subject to the necessary permissions, and are expected to last around two years.

The new facilities, which stand out for the simplicity of their lines, broad open spaces, energy efficiency and sustainability credentials, have been designed to reinforce the horizontal work dynamics between designers, pattern-makers and sales professionals, underpinned by creativity and articulated around open collaboration and communication.

The new five-storey building (with another two underground floors for parking) will complement the visual identity of the adjacent offices, which accommodate the zara.com. operations.

The building will be predominantly white and feature large horizontal windows with protruding eaves to provide protection from the sun while flooding the interiors, which will soar unfettered up to 4.7 metres tall, with natural light.

A structural trellis will introduce pillars every 12 x 22 metres, generating huge open spaces that will further facilitate the dynamic work flows between the various departments.

Sustainable efficiency with cutting-edge technology

The plans, designed by Batlleiroig, the architecture firm which was responsible for the recent expansion of the Group’s facilities in Arteixo and several of the brands’ head offices, is based on an orderly and structured design of flexible work spaces that lend themselves to easy and multiple reconfiguration.

The proportions and dimensions of this huge building give it a ‘shape coefficient’ which, together with its highly insulated façades and roofing, reduce its energy consumption and facilitate energy self-sufficiency, thanks to energy just taken from three new wind turbines located in Coruña’s Outer Port.

The new building will be fitted with a next-generation facility management system to ensure that its various elements operate in efficient harmony at all times, adapting them continuously in response to indoor and outdoor temperatures and air quality.

The building will also uphold the highest standards of sustainability. By using technology in the design phase, the impact of the construction process will be minimised. That industrialisation, coupled with intensive use of recycled materials, will reduce the works’ carbon footprint and waste generation. It will comply with the stringent requirements of the sustainable building benchmark US Green Building Council (USGBC) –and which it hopes to achieve its highest certification, LEED Platinum.

Two 9,500m2 work areas on separate floors

Each of the sales teams’ floors, which will measure 230 by 104 metres, will have two large, connected work areas, each spanning 9,500m2.

Outdoor-indoor integration to enhance personal wellbeing

Two big longitudinal outdoor areas adjacent to the east and north façades will add to the existing square outside the dotcom building, promoting users’ health and wellbeing, in keeping with the strategy embarked on at Inditex’s headquarters in 2018 of upgrading and integrating the complex’s outdoor spaces.

A grid of walkways will connect various parts of the new building with the adjacent buildings to ensure internal connectivity at the complex and optimal interaction between the various departments.

Local garment shipments have continued to attain an impressive recovery, largely driven by volume, as the price hike rate has been very low with normalcy restoration in the global supply chain from the pandemic's severe fallout.

The volume-driven export growth had important consequences for bottom tier entrepreneurs and their falling profit margins, said a study of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) made public at its office in Dhaka yesterday.

This is also likely to have implications for workers who are possibly having to meet higher production targets, it said.

The rise in productivity is not being realised through higher prices, although it is helping Bangladesh's apparels remain competitive. This also has important implications for wages, the CPD said in its Independent Review of Bangladesh's Development (IRBD).

Bangladesh has two main export destinations for locally made garment items -- the US, which accounts for 24 per cent of the shipments, and the European Union (EU), which accounts for 64 per cent.

The CPD study found that garment exports from Bangladesh to both markets increased between July and October of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal year.

In the US market, the 23.8 per cent growth in export earnings was mostly driven by volume, which rose by 19.8 per cent, whereas in contrast the rise in price per dozen was a mere 3.3 per cent.

The CPD study also found that in the case of woven garments, which are predominantly exported to the US market, average prices rose by only 1.9 per cent.

The rise in export value of 13.2 per cent was mostly driven by growth in volume of 11.1 per cent of the woven garment to the US markets.

In case of knit garments, the situation was somewhat different – export earnings rose by 44.6 per cent, with average prices increasing by 14.3 per cent while the export volume rose by 26.5 per cent of the knitwear items to the American markets.

Similarly, in the EU markets the recovery in garment shipment has been taking place but mostly in volume as the prices per kilogramme of the apparel items increased minimally.

For instance, export earnings rose by 8.9 per cent against the backdrop of a rise in volume of 7.9 per cent as against the rise in price of an insignificant 0.9 per cent to the EU in July and October of the current fiscal year compared with the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, the CPD study also said.

The study said in the case of EU markets, the value per kg of knitwear items increased by 13.6 per cent and volume increased by 10.3 per cent but the price increased only by 3 per cent in July and October of the current fiscal year compared with the same period of the last fiscal year.

In the case of woven garment items in the same markets in the same period, the value increased 0.8 per cent and volume increased by 3 per cent and the price of per kg woven garment items in fact declined by 2.2 per cent, the study also said.

The trend of volume-driven growth is more prominent for woven compared to knit, the CPD said, adding that it would be appropriate to say that where domestic value addition was higher, competitive strength and bargaining power of exporters are, to that extent, stronger.

The study indicates that brands and buyers had only marginally absorbed the rise in the costs of apparel production.

The export earnings have registered an impressive growth of 24.3 per cent during the first five months of FY22 while the base effect of low growth in FY20 is an issue.

The export performance is no doubt encouraging as growth of export earnings during July to November of FY22 surpassed the strategic annual target of 12.2 per cent set out for FY22, the study said.

For most part, this growth has been anchored in the high growth of export earnings from the readymade garments at 23 per cent. The growth of non-readymade garment export earnings was also an impressive 30 per cent during this period

More than three-fourths of the incremental export earnings was generated on account of the readymade garment sector, signalling the continuation of predominance of the item in the country's export basket and the rising export concentration in recent years.

Prada is gearing up for winter sports. The Italian luxury label has dropped a unique skiwear collection created in collaboration with premium brand Aspenx, launched earlier this month by the Aspen Skiing Company, which owns several ski resorts in the state of Colorado, USA.

Inspired by the atmosphere of the renowned US ski resort of Aspen, the limited-edition collection features a selection of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear items, such as coats, jackets, and hoodies, at prices ranging from €1,800 to €4,500.

The collection was designed in close collaboration with Aspen’s skiing professionals and with artist Paula Crown, who devised the collection’s graphic motifs.

This unique collaboration combines Aspenx’s technical know-how with Prada’s luxury expertise, creating a range of performance ski wear that blends style and function, and provides thermal insulation and protection through its sustainable garment technology.

The collection adopts a number of exclusive, sustainable high-tech solutions, such as the use of recycled polyester fibres and of techno-piqué fabrics, alongside Extreme-Tex, an innovative waterproof material created by Prada.

The collection is available for sale on the Aspenx website and at the US brand’s new store, which opened on Aspen’s Gondola Plaza on December 20. It is an extension of Prada’s Linea Rossa performance sportswear line, marked by the label’s distinctive red stripe logo.

The Italian luxury label, whose group generated a revenue of €1.5 billion in H1 2021, is not alone in aiming for the skiwear segment this season. French sportswear brand Aigle and luxe label Louis Vuitton also launched their own skiwear lines, while a number of premium labels have dropped collaborations with skiing brands, notably Chloé with Fusalp and Balmain with Rossignol.

Chanel celebrated snowy chalets and mountain peaks in its advertising campaign for the Fall/Winter 2021-22 collection, and Giorgio Armani announced the opening of a series of winter pop-up stores at several iconic ski resorts.

The year-on-year (YoY) growth in trade values for manufactured goods in the first three quarters of 2021 was 5 per cent for clothing and minus 7 percent for textiles, according to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which recently said despite strong headwinds contributing to the overall decline in merchandise trade in the third quarter, trade volume was still up by 11.9 percent YoY during the period.

The textiles category includes surgical masks, which surged earlier in the pandemic. The higher baseline for these products may explain their decline in the third quarter, WTO said in a note.

The forecast of a 10.8 per cent increase in merchandise trade for 2021 could still be achieved if volume growth picks up in the fourth quarter. This is a real possibility since measures to unblock container ports on the US West Coast met with some success, WTO said.

“Nevertheless, the emergence of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 appears to have tipped the balance of risks towards the downside, increasing the chance of a more negative outcome,” the multilateral trade body noted.

The main reason for the dip in merchandise trade volume in the third quarter was weaker than forecasted imports in North America and Europe. This translated into reduced exports from those regions and also from Asia. Asian imports contracted in the third quarter, but this decline was anticipated in the October trade forecast.

In contrast to volume, the value of world merchandise trade continued to climb in the third quarter as export and import prices rose sharply.

Textile and garment issuer PT Trisula Textile Industries Tbk. (BELL) said that the urgency of implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) based business is very important.

R. Nurwulan Kusumawati, Corporate Secretary of BELL said that considering the current conditions, the implementation of ESG in a company is an important consideration, both in investing and in business sustainability.

This can be seen from how the Government continues to intensively inform the ESG principles even to the extent that private companies support the program.

"BELL itself has implemented the ESG long before the ESG principle was echoed as it is today. Therefore, until now, BELL continues to pay attention to the ESG principle in every strategy and operational process.

The following are some of the certifications that BELL has obtained, including: ISO 9001 Quality Management System :2018, ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex," he explained, Monday (20/12).

He said that the certification was intended as a form of BELL's commitment to the implementation of ESG and to support the achievement of the SDGs.

He continued, regarding BELL's ESG plans in the future, previously BELL had prepared several plans, among others, exploring the possibility of using renewable energy sources such as the use of solar panels, gas fuel, palm shells, and others in the hope of reducing CO2 carbon emissions.

In addition, it also seeks to gradually increase the use of recycle water. From the production side, prioritize the use of raw materials, environmentally friendly chemical dyestuff through Oekotex Standard 100 certification, Eco Passport, ZDHC and others.

In addition, there is also a plan to participate in the Green Industry certification program from the Ministry of Industry. Then BELL will also improve its CSR program which empowers the community more; improve training programs, employee development and gender equality, and improve marketing, as well as production capacity to ensure the Company's growth through revitalization of machinery, quality improvement, and innovative products.

Regarding the investment, unfortunately, BELL was reluctant to comment further. He said that currently, it is still in the calculation stage. "Regarding investment for ESG going forward, it is currently still being calculated and in the planning process, so we can't share about it yet," he concluded.
